A few thoughts after watching the first broadcast of the year:
There were some pretty good bulls at the event, but the pen wasn't as consistent and even as I would have liked to have seen. It definately was luck of the draw on whether you scored big or not. My picks for top bulls at the event: Shakedown (Benny Cude), Itch&Scratch (Murphy Ranch) and - of course - Cochise.
Speaking of scoring...
90's for EVERYone!! Makes me wonder what was in the Kool-Aid down there... Great for the bullriders, but seriously, I saw very few rides that warranted scoring that high. I think the judges screwed themselves by giving out a few 90+ scores at the beginning of the event and then were stuck with giving the really GOOD rides outrageous scores.
Looks like they bumped up the TV production part of things - there were definately more camera angles shown than in previous telecasts. Kudos! Now if they could only do something about the bad lighting...
It was nice to see Cody Whitney take the event win. Haven't seen this guy ride in quite a while and was tickled to not only see him at the event, but to pick up the win, too. It was also nice to hear Donnie Gay in the announcers booth. He sure does liven up a broadcast.
The Rider-To-Watch: Elliot Jacoby. This kid appears to have not only god-given natural talent, but the drive to get things done. I hope for good things for him down the road. (I notice from another thread by Cody Thrasher that I'm not the only one who's impressed with Elliot's talent!)
They're touting Double Points during the CBR Finals at the end of the year. Not sure what I think about that. At this juncture, I think it's kinda daffy, but will reserve final judgment for later in the season.
All in all, if you have access to RFD-TV and are home and alert at 10 pm EST, tune in. It's not PBR but it'll give you a mid-week fix that should hold you til the weekend when PBR is on.
