i was just wondering if anyone else had heard about this, but down under in australia, there was a cowboy that fell off of his horse and sued the ranch owner....the cowboy won and now the ranch owner is making everyone that works for him wear a helmet when the ride instead of a cowboy hat!!!
i think that that is BS that the cowboy won...part of riding a horse is falling off and sorry that he couldnt keep his but in the saddle, i have sure been able to keep mine in when i ride...plus if i were to fall off it would more than likely be my fault!!
what are your guy's thoughts on this?? i am goign to try to find a news article about this...

IMO that's dumb. I'm sorry he died but you don't sue a ranch for falling off a horse. You have to remember that horses have a mind of their own and sometimes they take off, get spooked, or buck and you're not always gonna be able to stay on. That's like them people sueing McDonalds for being so fat or a bull rider sueing a bull owner for him getting his leg broke.....it's just stupid. COWBOY UP! That's just my opinion and if someone don't like it...get over it lol j/k.

#cussing# That is just wrong that the government could do that. I can see a bill coming out in the US about all horseback riders must where helemts, I think one was made up a few years ago. I dont want to wear a helmet anytime I rdie my horses. I made a lot of my profesors mad when I was in college because when I would ride on my own I wouldnt wear one(college policey). Most training barns that I know of require a helmet. I KNOW the risks(have had a head injury too). Guess we all are going to have to post the laws about ride at your own risk crap #cussing#

oh i know...i dont wear a helmet when i ride..i dont like them....i never have and probly never will.
at the college here if you are in a stall with a horse you have to have a helmet on, it is dumb. they are really strict on it now cause a few years ago a girl that was riding a green off the tract thoroughbred was riding by the dairy. the horse who had never seen a cow before freaked when the cows came running down to see what the horse was. it reared up lost it's footing and landed on here...she ended up dying at the hospital a few days later. that was the girls fault for riding the horse by our cows and her parents are suing the school saying that it was the school and the dairy's fault. they said that the cattle were aggressive and dangerous cause the ran at the fence. well they did that cause they were curious cause there are hardley ever horses by them. and if they were dangerous, how do we milk them with out getting hurt? people need to learn to take responsibility for their actions because it is their chioce where the ride their horse.
oh yeah, they also tried to make the kids onthe rodeo team start wearing helmets...it didnt pass to say the least, cause if it had passes, the kids said that they would quit the team.
if i had gotten a head injury before, i might consider wearing one, but really only under that condition probly.

People are so stupid. Mr.Dale told me today that there are 2 ways a horse can kill you...not by buckin you off cause you can feel it comin but by them rearin up and fallin on you and them takin off while you're still mounted. While your at it, why don't you go on and sue the ground for bein so hard. Come on people, use your brain! I could get a head injury and still not wear a helmet. I never will wear one! If I get killed by a horse that's fine but I ain't gonna sue the owner for everything they got.

Yeah, it is so dumb. I can't believe they won. I mean I feel bad for the guy and his family but they souldn't have won. You know when you get on a horse or a bull that you may get hurt or killed. You just have to know that. But that's just me. God Bless

ok now that is stupid...but oh well...
I couldnt imagine doing the rdinig I do with a helmet. Can you even think what could happen to a person with a helmet on running threw the trees...I can see on senerio...tree branch gets stuck under helmet , jerks rider off horse in the prosses breaks the riders jaw from the strap and severly injuring other body parts..no less could lose an eye split the skalp...
Oh I have come off a horse and landed on my head iwht a helmet on, hurt my jaw worse than it would have hurt my head....

It's a risk, but driving to work is as well. Are we going to need a helmet there as well. After all there are fatal car accidents everyday. I prefer to wear a bandana. If it flies off ... no big deal. Cowboy4443

I can see a bill coming out in the US about all horseback riders must where helemts, I think one was made up a few years ago. That's kind of like the seatbelt law. I know in Wisconsin and in most other states you have to wear a seatbelt or you will get a ticket. I have hated this law since I started driving. I wear mine (because I got in a car accident and, thank God, I had mine on) but I don't think it should be a law (for anybody over 16), you aren't endangering anybody other than yourself! You know the risks. Same thing with the helmet law. I can see it if you are allowing other people to ride your horses and for liability reasons, but personal use with a helmet should not be required. I can't believe somebody actually thought of this and tried to pass it as a law. That's crazy. . .#bandit#

The newspaper article is from November 2004. Has there been nothing since then? If so, I'd think this may be a dead issue.

We probably havent heard because it was an Aussie issue. There have been rumors of a bill being put threw the House and Congress for a long time now. Its just a matter of time.

That would be good ol' 'Big Brother' watchin' out for you and me........like we can't think or make choices on our own when it comes to our own health and well-being.
Personally, if I'm made to wear a helmet when I'm on a horse, all I can say is that they had better have a faster horse than mine if they wanna catch me and write me up!!

I guess I'm a bit out of the loop, is it mandatory to wear helmets in Australia?
