The draw for Cincinnati is out, and as usual, I have my eye on a few key matchups. I'm only doing five this week because I've been busy, but it's better than nothing. Enjoy!
Bronson Butcher vs. Akin for 8
Bronson Butcher will be making his BFTS debut this weekend, and he has one of the toughest draws in the round. Akin for 8, the bull owned by Diamond S Bucking Bulls, is unridden in five BFTS outs with an average bull score of 43.5 points. Butcher can obviously ride because he is riding with the best riders in the world this weekend, but he won't start one for one. I'm going with the bull, and look for the score to be 44 points at least.
My Pick: Akin for 8
Ned Cross vs. Little Coyote
Ned Cross has had his bright spots in 2008, but he is currently in a rough stretch as far as his BFTS performance goes. In fact, he hasn't placed in the top 10 since San Antonio. This weekend, his first bull is Little Coyote from Chad Berger and Clay Struve. In six BFTS outs, the bull has been ridden every time for an average ride score of 87.7 points. The pressure will be on Ned to not buck off, but I have a feeling the bull will get his first buckoff this weekend.
My Pick: Little Coyote
Pistol Robinson vs. Gappy Joe
Pistol Robinson is coming off a 13th-place finish in Oakland last weekend and is still battling Reese Cates for the Rookie of the Year award. The youngster has drawn Gappy Joe, a bull owned by Jeff Robinson and Larry the Cable Guy. This bull is possibly the pick of the litter in the first round because he has been ridden five out of seven times on the BFTS for an average ride score of nearly 87 points. This should be a perfect matchup, and it should get Pistol off to a great start in Cincinnati. As for the score, I'll say 88.25.
My Pick: Pistol Robinson
Sean Willingham vs. Vortex
Sean Willingham has only had one top-10 finish since his win in Orlando, and it's been a big struggle in recent weeks. His first round bull this weekend will be Vortex, a bull owned by Cross Lazy S Bucking Bulls. The bull has been ridden twice in three BFTS outs this season for an average score right above 85 points. It's time to get Willingham on a roll heading into the World Finals, and this is the bull that will start things off. He will dress him up a little and end up around 86.5 points.
My Pick: Sean Willingham
Wiley Petersen vs. Splat Kat
Wiley Petersen has three top-10 finishes in his last four events including third last week in Oakland. His draw in the first round this weekend is Splat Kat, a bull owned by Danny Lemmons. This bull has been ridden five out of eight times on the BFTS this season, and the average ride score is almost 89 points. Wiley has been riding great, and he will win the first round in Cincinnati with something near 90!
My Pick: Wiley Petersen
The Final Say
That's all I have for this week. I expect a lot of qualified rides in round one this weekend because there are a lot of rideable bulls. These guys are starting to gear up for the World Finals, and they are going to be giving it 110%. If you have anything to say about my matchups or have any of your own to add, please do so. Thanks for reading and enjoy the event!
