Here are a few thoughts after tonight's awesome round two.
-First off, I want to mention how awful it was to see Joe Baumgardner injured tonight. The injury looked bad on the replays, and I'm sure it was even worse down in the arena. I hope all goes well with the recovery. And how great of a guy is Shorty Gorham? He was legitimately choked up after it happened, and that says something about his great personality.
-The pen of bulls was supposed to be great, and with the exception of a few off-nights, it lived up to the hype. Bones was definitely the rankest bull in the pen, and while I still don't think he has been as good as Troubador all season, he very well could win the Bull of the Year award. And honestly, it will be well deserved. He was as close to unrideable as it gets on this night.
-Speaking of great bulls, that was the best trip I've ever seen from Avalanche. He made Mike Lee look like a #50 guy instead of a top-six guy. Wow, what an out!
-Also on the topic of bulls, I was happy to see Big Bucks with a very impressive out, and it was nice to see Camo still pumping out the RPMs. Those two have had great careers, and I'll personally be very sad to see them retired. I think Big Bucks still has a couple years left in him, but it's nice to see him go out on top instead of going out for injury or something worse.
-Did I miss something, or did they skip the first four rides on the telecast? I don't remember seeing Pandora's Box, Fist Full of Dollars, Little Mr. T, or Scott Schiffner on Bovine Prime. I know these are the qualifiers from the respective countries (except Santos), but I personally wanted to see the bulls as well.
-On the rider front, it's great to see Chris Shivers and Adriano Moraes riding well. Shivers may be a serious threat in 2009, since he is feeling better than ever. And what else needs to be said about Adriano? It stinks his retirement has been overshadowed by McBride's, but maybe he will go out with a VERY high finish in Vegas.
-It was also nice to see Marchi ride another one to get one stop closer to a title, but what's with picking Copperhead Slinger for the 40th time this season? That's getting old real fast. I understand the reasoning, but come on, let's get some new blood. You are the best in the world, pick something else.
-Lastly, I'll throw out a few disappointments when it comes to riders and bulls. As for riders, Sean Willingham and Dustin Elliot haven't started like I thought they would. I really thought Elliot could win the average because he rides that well. Willingham has struggled, but he usually brings his A-Game to Vegas. Fortunately for both, there is a lot of riding to go.
-As for disappointing bulls, Voodoo Child and Apache Leap take the cake. Voodoo Child was shaky in his last out, and he had the same trip tonight. He was scored 43.5, and that was probably generous. I hope to see the real Voodoo Child in the later rounds because he's truly one of the best when he is on his game. I expected big things from Apache Leap tonight, but I believe he was the lowest-rated bull in the round. He was shown up big time by his running buddy, Major Payne.
Feel free to add a few of your own thoughts. I'm ready for round three!
