Bittersweet news indeed. It is because of Smets that I got into watching bull riding on a regular basis. I had a "fan crush" on him way back when! LOL I got over it, but stuck with watching the bulls, the riders, the fighters, and all that goes with it.
I wish him all the best. I was writing a piece about bull fighting in the US and wrote to him and several other bull fighters. He's one of the ones who wrote back. He's made life different for people in his profession and has made his mark. I doubt we'll stop seeing him. My guess is he'll be around commentating, teaching, etc. He deserves a break.
