Howdy, all. Greetings from Minnesota.
I've been doing some research on the PBR for a fiction project I'm working on, and wondered if anyone could answer some newbie questions for me.
1) Is there a specific name for the platform behind the chutes where the riders congregate?
2) Is there a specific name for the alley behind the chutes where the bulls exit the arena after a ride?
3) When and where are the first and second round matchups posted? Are the short go bulls posted before the event, and the riders know who they get based upon how they finish in the first two rounds?
4) When describing a bull with no horns, is the correct term "a muley" or the bull was 'muley'?
5) Could someone describe a 'suicide wrap' to me? I've heard several definitions and would like some clarification.
Thanks for any help you can give me!

I know what I think the answers for most of those are, but I'll leave the answering to the experts on this board!! I can answer #3- if you go to www.pbrnow.com you can see the draw for the event. They post the draw for the first night a couple days before the event and then they update with the second nights draw, the list of short-go bulls and the standings from the first night on the morning of the second night.
Does that help?

Um.....muley is right...I just usually say bull with no horns. All I know about a suicide wrap that I can tell you is that the rope is the rider runs the rope through their pinky and it increases the chance of them gettin hung up....if I'm wrong someone correct me. I heard it's harder to get out when you use a Brazilian rope. As far as the platform and stuff....Terri should be able to answer that one for ya when she gets back.

1) Is there a specific name for the platform behind the chutes where the riders congregate? Most guys just call it the Catwalk
2) Is there a specific name for the alley behind the chutes where the bulls exit the arena after a ride? The alley is where the bulls go when they leave the arena. Then they are loaded into a strippin chute, where the flank strap is taken off, then they go to the back pens after all their work is done.
3) When and where are the first and second round matchups posted? Are the short go bulls posted before the event, and the riders know who they get based upon how they finish in the first two rounds? i dont ride in any pro shows, but i do ride in the high school shows and out draw is posted at the entry office, which is usually a trailor. But i think in the pro shows, it is posted by the locker room doors. Yes, the short go draw is decided by how they place in the earlier rounds.
4) When describing a bull with no horns, is the correct term "a muley" or the bull was 'muley'? A muley. Ya never say the bull was muley, you say, he is that little black bald (meaning white faced) faced muley bull.
5) Could someone describe a 'suicide wrap' to me? I've heard several definitions and would like some clarification. The original wrap is where you take the tail of the rope, and lay it across your hand, then take it and go behind the wrist, then back through your hand again, so the tail ends up on the outside of the pinky, In a suicide wrap, you do the same thing, but instead you take the tail and put it between the ring finger and the pinkey.
I hope this helps

Thank you all so much! These answers are great. I hope you all don't mind if I come back as more questions arise. I've been reading the threads with great interest.

Hello I just wanted to welcome you to the board since it looks like Cody answered your questions. Feel free to stop by at any time. It is always good to have a fellow Great Lakes/Upper Midwest member.
Oh and two thoughts on the questions. first, I am not sure what you are writing for or how much time and effort is going into it.. but the best way to make it sound authentic is to spend sometime with the contestants stock contractors arena personnel etc as there is a lot of slang in the sport that you will not pick up anywhere else.
Secondly Cody did a great job describing what a suicide wrap is but unless you are using the term for the dramatic impact very few in the sport refer to it by that term and describe it as a split finger wrap.

Heres a picture of a "suicide" wrap...notice how the rope goes in between the ring finger and pinky finger with the regular wrap having on the outside of the pinky. The pinky wrap isnt as dangerous and everyone makes it out to be. With the way bull ropes are made as opposed to back in the day its not so dangerous. If you hand rolls over, you are gonna hang up whether you bear it through the pinky or not.

Thanks so much! I'm gleaning tons of information. As to the length of the fiction piece and the time involved...I'm working on a novel (my fourth) which centers around a bull rider.
I've read Josh Peter's Fried Twinkies book. Can anyone recommend some other reading that might be beneficial?

The first one that comes to mind is Ty Murry's King of Cowboys has a lot of information about his experiences. Word of caution about both titles though. Remember each was written with an agenda so there are a certain slant to each. I know that I have read others but I can not remember the titles and authors right now. A lot of information can also be gained by reading the numerous newspaper profiles about different riders and different events as well.

A good place to find newspaper articles and such is on Michael Gaffney's page at michaelgaffney.com/. Go to the news link and he always has all kinds of stuff on there!

Ok, I've just spent WAY too much time delving into the archives on Michael Gaffney's site. I knew you all would be a fount of information! Thanks so much for all your help.

Also, I'd be interested to hear some of your favorite expressions that the riders use. Going to a PBR event and hanging out with the riders and support staff isn't an option at the moment, but I'd love to hear from those of you who have. Thanks!

I think one of the greatest parts of going to a live event is when they start, they say "This is not a rodeo, this is the one and only P B R"-That is the best!

hmm my favorite is probably " That bull is spinning faster than a roatertiller on a John Deer Tractor" The commentators tend to use terms such as that one.

Good one, ya, pretty much anything Justin McKee says during an event is pretty funny. He has some of the funniest comparisons.
