i don't remember where i heard it, but on some bullriding i saw a couple of younger guys talke about they are inventing new helmets. they seemed to be trying to get it out there, but the interviewer just passed it by. maybe they are working on those helmets around the sport here. i hope so. i would much rather see one of the guys get in on the profits-like cody lambert did--than it go to someone outside the sport.

I'm just not sure some are seeing the points here. Everyone wears a helmet= less injuries to the head (the most important organ like Kelly said) Everyone has a choice to wear helmet= more injuries to the head Who cares if it makes the sport a little less dangerous. The goal is to give the riders the chance to live another day. It shouldn't barbaric anymore. I respect what you said Chief, and I know you know more about it since you have been involved in rodeo. I'll respect your opinions til the day I die. But I just see helmets helping out when looking at the big picture. Sure, some situations are made worse by the helmets, but as a whole, the helmets definitely save a lot more lives than they hurt. I'm a big golfer, and my main motto while playing golf is to "minimize my losses." The same thing goes for helmets in bullriding. It will help "minimize the losses", and that is only a good thing as far as I'm concerned. If I rode bulls, I would probably have a different opinion, but on the other hand, I would d**n sure be wearing a helmet too.

Howdy, I want you all to know that I respect your opinions as well. And I do understand what your saying about the injury thing. I did forget to mention in my posting that it should be up to the rider, not whoever. Like csb stated, it works for some, and not others. To each their own. I do have to admit, the vests are great. We never had them when I started, got my first one in 94, and ironicly, 2 weeks after i had it...it did save my life. I took a shot from the end of the horn, right where my heart is. He hit me so hard, that if I wasnt wearing it...it would have stopped my heart and killed me. I still have that vest, and you can plainly see where it hit. I know I have saved alot of abuse to my mid section because of the vest, and because of that, I was able to go to the next show. So yeah....I do understand that part of it. If I had to wear a helmet.......I couldnt do it. Maybe someone else could, but as a bullfighter, it would be difficult i believe. As is for bullriders....some could...and some couldnt. I have spoken to alot of bullriders about it, and 90% dont, or couldnt, some have tried and didnt like it, some did, and didnt mind it. Anyways...let it up to the riders.....Thank you for having this board, and to all the military so we may live in a country and be able to discuss things like this and get differant opinions.

BC.. I totally see where you are coming from and agree 100%, that it would be hard to make a current bull rider switch to a helmet. It's not as easy a transition as the vest was. But I do believe that if the first time you ever got on a bull was with a helmet and continued to wear it, you'd have no problem with getting used to it. It's like anything in life... it can't effect you if you are used to it. I don't forsee a huge increase in helmets for quite a few years.
I do have to say that it is pretty stupid to use tradition as an excuse. I can understand what CSB is saying, that he had a bad experience and that's why. I can understand not being able to adjust. However, I will never sway my opinion of helmets being good but I am do think it should be a choice and not mandatory. I just wish more youngsters would choose to wear one when they are starting out.

I would say whatever the riders are comfortable in, they should wear!! Or whatever they feel the safest in!! My own opinion: it doesn't really matter to me what they wear. As long as they stay safe. LOL...if any of that made sense to you all. LOL

Okay since I was not here when this started I will now add my opinion 1. Helmets should not in any way be mandatory for any reason. it should be up to the rider what they choose to do. There is no real "bull riding" helmet and there are absolutely cons to wearing them. Everything from neck injuries to facial injuries due to poor design. I know they may be thinking of making better helmets but they are not there yet. 2. Guys do not get paid unless they are on the back of a bull. A serious head injury can keep them off the bull. A helmet therefore makes good business since to any rider that can adjust to the change in weight and gravity. 3. As younger riders start to wear them I think we will see more of them, naturally we will see a move toward more guys wearing them (in many ways we already have) it will be a natural progression and not something anyone needs to force on any level. As more of the guys in the upper levels start wearing them so will the guys at the lower level. Finally, on a personal prefrence...I am a person that hates to watch wrecks so my aversion to mandatory helmets is not due to that like it is some other people. As a matter of fact I do not watch the wreck tape that they show at the beginning of the PBR or the Xtreme bulls events as it makes me cringe. Yes I understand that it is a risky sport and that is part of the thrill but I still hate to see the severe injuries. I would much rather watch the close calls then the severe injuries!

I remember in one of my Outdoor Leadership Classes we were required to wear helmets when rock climbing. However we then got into a discussion about how when you fall the helmet can actually cause paralyzation by the way it hits the back of your neck. Now I realize rock climbing helmets are different than bullriding ones, but does anyone know anything about if they can actually cause paralysis and neck injuries? Just throwin that out there, do with it what you wish.

At the Sankey's bull riding school i went to they told us that helmets actually increase the probabilty of a rider gettin knocked out

hmmm... some how I think Dr. Tandy knows more about that and he said that it decreases the odds of concussions. Plus, I have numerous research articles on the subject.... helmets decrease it... how many times can you remember Lee, Peterson, Gelenyse, etc having a concussion??? I can't think of even one time.

I agree with BC, it doesnt seem as much of a cowboy sport if you add helmets to it...just my opinion.
