What's up with this guy and his ever-changing last name?
(I accidentally posted this in the PRCA forum before.)

I have been wondering the exact same thing for weeks.
They will have him in the draw as Helton Barbosa. After round one you look at the results and it is Helton Da Silva!! Or vice versa...
It drives me crazy!!!

nope, they are the same person. Some days he is Da Silva other days he is Barbosa. Its kinda tough with those long names....here is his PBR BIO...
Helton Barbosa / 16
BFTS Season Standings Challenger Season Standings Rides
Born: N/A Height: N/A Weight: N/A Home: Douradina, PR, BZ
Rider Bio Career Earnings: $183,166.59 Years Riding Pro: 1 Seated: Yes Card Type: Card Back Number: 16
Helton Luiz Da Silva got his start riding bulls at the age of 17 when he was working on a ranch in his native Brazil. He says his uncle used to ride bulls, and he taught me how to ride. Although Da Silva admits he still learning. “Adriano [Moraes] and Ednei [Caminhas] are still teaching me how to improve all the time. They help me quite a bit,” states Da Silva. Injuries are nothing new to Da Silva who rode with a cast on his left wrist at the 2005 PBR World Finals. He dislocated his left wrist at a bull riding event in Brazil at the beginning of September, which required surgery. However, the added weight of the cast did not affect this cowboy’s balance as rode away with an additional $144,429 at the Finals. Da Silva says his proudest moment was winning the U.S. Smokeless Co. (USSTC) Challenger Bismarck, N.D. He covered Black Jacket of Berger Bucking Bulls for 85.5 points and three-time PBR Bull of the Year Little Yellow Jacket of Berger/Taupin and Teague Bucking Bulls for 92 points to win top honors and more $12,000 in prize money.

I didn't know it was the same guy either, I thought so, because they would really look alike, but I guess I just never paid that close attention. He's the one who had the cast on his free hand for most of last year right?

The problem here i believe, is the fact that there is Renato Da Rosa, Helton luis da silva, who is now called helton Barbosa, the confusion lies in the Da rosa and the Barbosa.
I hope that cleared it up for ya.

I don't know if I'm going to be able to explain this, as I don't really remember how it works myself. But, my Spanish professor from last semester, said something about last names & Hispanic/Brazilian culture. Something about how they children use the last names of both the father & the mother (maiden name) & that as the generation go on, their name gets longer & longer. So, it could be that both da Silva & Barbosa are Helton's last names.
I wish I coulda remembered what she told me a bit better, because that's not really much of an explanation.

Yeah you add your mom's maiden name to the end of your name. (I'm from Puerto Rico) Dad's Name: Juan Torres Mom's name: Maria Gomez My name: Juanita Torres Gomez
My last name is really Torres but my mom's last name is added to the end to show what family I come from. That would explain why it seems like he has two last names

From what I know is that Silva is in almost every Brazilain name, My guess would be that Barbosa is the simple english version that him and the PBR came up with, I'm sure it is just an error. My buddy is from brazil I will ask him

wow i didnt even realize that he was the same guy. i thought they just looked really similar. Wait there are alot of brazilians on the tour and they dont have the name Silva in their last name.
I think everybody is right on that both his fathers and mothers maiden names are part of his whole name. Maybe its something like Helton Luix Barbosa Da Silva...maybe? And the PBR just shortens it to either Barbosa or Da silva
