People have said that there are four key components to make a great bull rider, heart, try, toughness and some natural ability. There is one rider that has demonstrated all of these the last few months that no one seems to be talking about. He has not yet won a BFTS event but I have a feeling that will change before the end of the year. Here is why:
1. The case for heart - If you give him a bull he will get on it. Give him the 4th reride option for the night…he will smile and say yes. Talk to him about bulls and bullriding and he will have nothing but a smile on his face. He seems to truly love what he does.
2. The case for try - He does not open his hand unless he hears the buzzer or his head is almost on the ground. Everyone talked about how Justin held on so long at the finals and simply cowboyed up and kept his hand closed. I have seen this rider do that on a regular basis not for a Million dollars but in some cases for $500.00. It does not matter if he is on the BFTS or the DT tour or another association he will give it everything he can. Watch the tape from Reno and you will see a great example of this.
3. The case for Toughness-He has had his fair share of injuries and still can not wait to get back. Last year days after separating his shoulder he could no longer stand to watch as the others rode. So he looked at his draw and said give him to me.
4. The case for Natural Ability-He can stay in the center of all different kinds of bulls, spinners, buckers, hoppers, leapers, junk. He rides around 43% of everything he gets on. He also has an impressive list of rides and performances at some of the big shows, including a 95 at the Oklahoma Extreme Bulls event. He also has fought his way on tour from his performance on the CT and ET tours this year.
Mix in the fact that he is also one of the most polite riders you will meet and you can not help but cheer for him.
