Do these guys have insurance or do they rely on Resistol Relief Fund? I have always been curious due to the high risk of getting hurt. I hope they're not paying fully out of pocket. But when you think about it, it's probably none of my business

Yes, the PBR provides the insurance at the BFTS events. At the lower tier events the PBR still offers insurance, but the riders have to pay for it out of their own pockets.

Also some have wives that have insurance coverage through their work. Bull riders can't get private insurance unless they have another occupation and list that on the application for obvious reasons. The PBR's insurance policy helps but doesn't cover MAJOR injuries that is why the resistol relief is there. BTW, everything the sportsmedicine team does is free which is why they don't usually send them STRAIGHT to the hospital. Justin boots underwrites all of the expenses so they deserve A LOT of props and same with Dr. Tandy, who works the PBR events pro bono.

Also the insurance that they do have through the PBR is basically catastrophic insurance. It does not kick in until several thousand in expenses and then only pays a percentage of actual costs after that. There is also a cap on the actual dollar amount they pay out. As a result, any injury minor or major can incur a major expense for a rider.
In addition the Resistol Relief Fund provides help for lost wages too. An injury that puts a rider out for sometimes several months is a major financial burden for an individual or family that relies on bull riding to pay the bills. It serves as a version of workers compensation that the rest of the public may receive if they are injured on the job.
Without the Resistol Relief fund and the Sports Medicine Team a lot of the riders would not be able to compete. So if you are looking for some great charities to donate to...especially as tax time approaches be sure not to forget them!

I hope the RRF is easy to get for these guys. It's one of a few charities I donate to at this point.
