Guilheme shoulda, coulda, woulda....but he didn't win the title and Adriano did. I have to agree with bullardbulls. Whether you like the points system or not, it is here to stay. I think it gives any of the guys in the top ten a chance at the World Title not just the guys in the #1 or #2 spot. I feel that Adriano did deserve to win since he out rode Guilheme.
I think some of you are forgetting the 2004 World Finals where Adriano was in first place through out most of the entire season and during the first week-end he tore his bicep muscle and could not hang on and ended up losing the title to Mike Lee. I don't remember anyone complaining about Mike not deserving the title or the point system was unfair back then. Mike had not won one single event that year, but he came into the finals and rode 6 out of 7 bulls and won over Adriano. Would all of you be complaining about Adriano winning ,still be doing so if Mike L, Sean W, Justin, Brian C, Wiley or Ross would have won the title instead of Adriano....I don't think so. I personally didn't think Adriano had a chance at winning, but I was glad he did and he proved that even the "old guys" can still ride.
Adriano is not my favorite rider (I always pick Ross C for Fantasy Picks...Terrie and Kelly can atest to that one...LOL), but I think he had a great finals and he out rode Guilheme and definately deserved to win. Yes, I would have liked to see someone who had never won the title like Sean or Wiley win it, but that didn't happen because they to did not ride as well as they maybe could have.
The World Champion is not determined by who is in first place going into the event, but by who rides the most bulls at the event, and that is what Adriano did.

The World Champion is not determined by who is in first place going into the event, but by who rides the most bulls at the event, and that is what Adriano did. I don't agree. I think that the world champion should be the rider who had the best season, not necessarily the best finals. I do think that the points system needs to be re-vamped, but then again I don't have any suggestions how to make it more fair. I just think that the person who has the best season should win the world title. Anybody can get lucky and feel healthy for a week, but you need to be on top of your game for an entire season to be a world champ. I think I'm not the first or the only one to say it's good to see Adriano get it, but he did not have a great season, but did have an amazing finals. I would've loved to see Wiley Peterson, Sean Willingham or, yes, Guilherme Marchi win the world title because they all had good seasons.

I'd love to see a breakdown of how long each of the riders in the number one spot this year held that possition for. I'd lay odds that either Adriano or Guilherme was in lead the longest; which would equal, in mind at least, that if this is the case Adriano did not have a bad season. Even last night on the Dallas BFTS repeat they'd mentioned that Adriano had been leading the longest of anyone that had been points leader up until then; at the time of that particular event Guilherme had just moved to a little over 500 points over Adriano. That being said, if Adriano led for that long I don't think he had a bad year, but he did have an awesome finals while Guilherme had a not so good one. In the end its what made the difference, but they both had good years in my opinion. Everyone seems to forget that Mike Lee won the 2004 title without winning a single BFTS event, and if I'm not mistaken, without leading the points standings at any point during the year. The title goes to the person that does best the entire year; Adriano did great at the beginning, might have slacked off a little during the end, and then had a great finals; in this instance it was enough to overtake Guilherme. I could name five or six people that had really great years as you did, however I differ in the belief that I do believe that Adriano had just as good of a season as the rest of them, the majority were just towards the beginning of the year.

Well, if you consider Bull Riding a sport than you have to look at this way. In the NFL, the regular season does not matter, it is what you do in the Playoffs. In the NBA, the regular season does not matter, it is what you do in the playoffs. In MLB, the regular season does not matter, it is what you do in the playoffs. In the NHL, the regular season does not matter, it is what you do in the playoffs. In other words, if you win the regular season title thats great but, if you can't finish it you do not deserve the title of World Champion. Marchi did not earn the title of World Champion. Adriano performed when it mattered and therfore he is the 2006 PBR World Champion.

Again, I will reiterate... by no means is 1 first place finish, 5 second place finishes and several other top 15 place finishes a bad season. (Adriano's season)
Guillherme had 1 first place, 3 second places and 4 third places plus several other top 15 place finishes.
Both led large portions of the season. Both have riding percentages above 50%.
I gotta say the old point system was boring. We knew the world champ before finals and that rider could have a crappy finals and still win. The new format adds excitement to the finals and keeps the pressure on all the guys. It isn't like the 10th place guy going in will ever win it so any one of the contenders is going to have a good/great season. I don't think a rider with a crappy finals should win..obviously the pressure got to Guillherme (and don't get me wrong. I LOVE Marchi), but I am not letting my preference cloud my judgement. Does anybody not remember last year??? Justin won because he got it done at finals... had he done as bad as Marchi this year then Marchi would have been champ and not Justin... would you guys complain then??? (I remind you Marchi had a great season last year and a better finals than Justin, but Justin held on to the lead AT FINALS and it was exciting that way!). I am not a fan of handing a mediocre performance a million bucks and a championship, I like the fact that the champ has to finish the year strong.
I will also admit, I hated the change when it was made... I felt AWFUL for Adriano.. any other year he would have been the champion going into finals. It's hard to be the first guy when the change is made but nobody has that excuse anymore. That point system has been in play for 3 finals now.
Let me also remind you that other sports do this.
Look at football... is the team that wins the SuperBowl, the best team that year? do they have the best record?? NO! They have the wildcard for that reason... a less than stellar record can get you in. I will remind you football fans that the Colts were undefeated last year (best record in their league) and didn't make the superbowl because they lost in the play-offs... Fair? sure that is part of the sport, "Any Given Sunday" means any team can beat anyother team on any given sunday. We as football fans EXCEPT that..
Look at NASCAR this year... Kasey Kane had by FAR the most wins (6 or 7, can't remember) and he BARELY made it into the chase, actually came down to the last race before the chase and a few points. That is craziness but it is the point system. Jimmie Johnson was second going in to the chase, dropped to the bottom of the 10 guys in the first few races (due to crashes), and now because of 5 back-to-back top 2 finishes is back at the top. Do you think those 5- top 2 finishes will matter if he is eliminated early next week??? NO...he will not win the championship because of a poor finish.. it's his to loose just like it was Guillherme's to loose.

Kelly, have you finally forgiven Mike Lee for winning the 2004 World Title? Lord knows how many debates we had about that back in the day. I agree though, it's how it should be. The excitement around this year's World Finals was amazing, and that last day of bull riding was some of the best I've ever seen. The hype was great, and the riders performed. I think the #4 or #5 guy going into The Finals is about the limit as far as winning the World Title, and that's how it should be. As for other sports, I'd say 75% of the teams that win it all weren't the best overall team throughout the season, and that % may even be too low. It's rare the best regular season team wins it all. Bull riding fans just need to get used to that and adjust to the points system. In this case, however, the top five or six guys in the world had great seasons and deserved to win it all. I can't honestly say any of those guys were undeserving. And once again, I'm not even close to being an Adriano or Guilherme fan.

Cody- to clarify... I was never mad at Mike Lee... I was mad at the point system. That was the first year it changed and anytime change is made, someone is getting screwed. That was my reasoning but now that it is in effect...nobody has that excuse. Guillherme knew going in that if he had a mediocre finals then he'd open the door for someone else to win (I don't think Adriano or any of us quite understood how likely this was the first year).
Now, I like the point system - it keeps finals exciting. This was BY FAR my most exciting finals. Inside the arena the tension was tight and after each ride somebody else was leading the championship race... Marchi, Lee and Adriano... And like you and I have said... best seasons don't mean anything in most sports, teams with GOOD seasons sometimes win. Basically, it all comes down to who wants it most in the end and Adriano obviously wanted it more than Marchi this year.

I think I know what she meant about Adriano's "attitude." She was probably talking about his temper tantrums. Some of them were kind of violent. I think it's just because he's Brazilian. That's not attitude, it's just normal for him. Some cultures in the world show their emotions more than we Americans do. It is probably not imbarrassing for Guilherme or the other Brazilians to see him cry because for them it's a normal thing to show how you feel. Whoever said "Guilherme's young and good for the old man!" Ha ha ha! Right on! I think the points system should cut down the possible points a little but it is a good thing to not know for sure who's going to win the world title when the finals begin. jmo
