Hello everyone,
Jody sustained an injury in round 1 in OKC last weekend (Fri night). Jody's groin muscle was torn away completely from the bone. In the process, three branches of the fermoral artery were also torn, causing an arterial bleed in Jody's leg. We were in the hospital in OKC from Fri night until Monday afternoon. Jody was in immense pain and nothing seemed to help. The pain was not typical of this injury. In fact, Jody went into shock on Friday night due to the bleed and the pain.
On Monday morning, the doctors in OKC told us Jody would be fine and the artery had clotted off, so it was no longer bleeding. However, they did not formal tests (ultrasound, MRI, CT scan) to confirm this. They sent us home Monday and told us to come for a follow-up appt on Friday.
After arriving home Jody's pain continued to increase. His thigh was four times its normal size and hard as a rock. He would scream out in pain...and Jody is a tough guy. The pain medicine wouldn't even dull the pain. By Tuesday morning, Jody's knee and lower leg was beginning to swell. He was getting jondiced and ashen colored. I had a feeling in my gut that something was not right.
I had been in contact with Dr. Tandy Freeman (the PBR doctor) since Sunday. I had Jody call him on Monday and then again on Tuesday. Tandy was very concerned because Jody was not having a typical reaction to the torn groin. He set up an appointment with a vascular surgeon in Dallas for Wednesday at 11:00.
On Wednesday morning, Jody, his mom, and I all went to Dallas. Jody was volmitting on the way there and was very lethargic. He could barely walk into the doctor's office. His eyes were starting to look yellow. Jody looked like a walking dead man...I am not exaggerating!
They tech at the doctor's office did an ultrasound and paged the doctor out of surgery. One look at the ultrasound scan and the doctor rushed Jody into emergency surgery (pushing back two other scheduled surgeries).
Jody had lost six pints of blood (your body only holds ten) and all of that blood was accumulating in a huge clot in Jody's thigh, forming a psuedo-anuerism. The doctor removed over 800 cc's of blood and fluid from Jody's leg, removed the anuerisms, repaired the three tears in the artery, gave Jody two pints of blood, and smoothed the torn muscle (which had knotted up in his thigh) back down.
The doctor personally told me that if we had waited until Friday to follow-up with the doctors in OKC, Jody would've lost his leg and probably his life. OVER A STUPID GROIN MUSCLE!!! It's just unbelievable! Guys tear their groins all the time. What a freak accident!
Anyway, Jody is doing much better now. His color has returned. His body still needs to make up some blood to raise his levels and should do so within two weeks. We have a follow up appointment in Dallas in two weeks to remove the stitches and staples. (Oh yeah, he has two incisions...one is ten inches long and the other is eight inches long. He has sixty staples and 15 stitches!)
As for me, I'm doing okay too. I've dialated b/t 2-3 and I was 36 weeks yesterday. I'm hoping Cooper will hold out for a little longer b/c 36 weeks is still a little early. I have been on an emotional roller-coaster. The fact that I almost lost my husband is unbelievable and surreal. It will catch me off gaurd every once in a while and I will break down a cry. But he his hear now to see the birth of his third child and I have never been so thankful in all my life. I just can't tell you what something like this will do to you. I will tell Jody "I love you" and start crying. Partly b/c those words don't seem like enough anymore and also because I can hear him tell me that he loves me too. He'll hug me and I'll cry...because i'm so thankful I have him here to wrap his arms around me. It just teaches you to never take things for granted. An injury that seems so simple and common can so easily threaten your very existence. So love each other everyday as if it's your last. Don't take anyone for granted. We are never promised tomorrow, so thank God for today!!!
Thanks to all of you who have kept us in your prayers. Please continue to do so. I don't graduate until August and bullriding was our source of income. Jody will not be able to ride for a year (and he'll probably never get on another one). So, please pray that God opens doors financially for us and shows us the path that we should follow.
I will keep in touch. Baby Cooper will be here shortly!!!
Love and God Bless,
Amanda
