I've gotten to be good friends with a bareback rider recently. I've watched it a few times, but I really don't know much about it. Any information that I could get about this would be appreciated!! I'd like to learn more about how hard it is, if the scoring is the same as bullriding, etc...

Well I am not sure what you have learned so far and I don't know tons but I will start with the basics and others can jump in.
Scoring is the same in bull riding in that 100 points is a perfect score and the score is based half on the animals performance and half on the riders performance. It differs however, in that a good bareback score is in the 80s.
The rules for scoring are a bit different as well. First instead of a rope they use a bareback rigging...It is basically a suitcase handle on leather. It is too small for their hand and they jam their hand in the handle for a snug fit (this is why they sometimes have a hard time getting their hand out!). They nod like a bull rider but the rider must "mark out" basically they need to start with their spurs above the horses shoulders until they land the first jump out of the chutes. If they do not do this they are disqualified. From there the rider holds on for 8 seconds ideally spurring the horse. Unlike bull riding instead of the feet going out and back to the bull to spur they spur from the neck back to the rigging switching the position of the spurring to show control. (You will also notice they lean back more then a bull rider as well) They must not touch the horse or rigging with their free hand just like bull riding. Once they have a successful ride they work their hand out of the rigging and instead of jumping off like a bull rider they use a pickup man. (These guys are the Best) Usually one pick up man pulls the flank and grabs or slows the horse as the other one grabs the rider and pulls him off the horse then sets him on the ground. Occasionally the rider will not wait for the pick up man, or chose not to use them either because they don't trust them or personal preference, however several have shattered legs and ankles doing this.
As far as which is harder I will let others battle that one out! Several guys do or have done both at one time or another.
Hope this helps!

Thanks so much!! The info definitely helped me understand it a little better! I was thinking that the scores were a little low. When I heard he won Rookie of the Year and second place at finals on I think it was a 79 or 80 I was thinking, how??? But I guess it was pretty good, now! I had seen his riggins, but didn't look at em too close. Thanks for your help!
