I know the season is not over yet, but I wonder: Which bull do you guys think has a good shot at it this year?
I think White Magic has been a surprise - but a good one. He's had many rank outs and huge scores, including a 48 against Justin McBride in Nampa recently.
I think Chicken on a Chain is also in that list. He's been getting better and better.
I'm not sure where they are right now but I think they are in the top 5.
And by the way, in case no one caught it on a recent telecast - there will be a new way to determine the BOTY this year: the 5 candidates will be pre-determined (by votes), and the one of those 5 who performs the best during the Finals (bull scores) will be the BOTY. Good move by the PBR IMO.

White Magic and Chicken on a Chain are the best bulls I've seen this year and if they continue to buck like they have all year they are the favorites to win bull of the year.

From the vote perspective I have to say Chicken.
I really am not thrilled about the new format for selecting the bull based on their performance and scores at the finals. We have all seen amazing bulls have a single slightly off night. I would hate to see a bull lose bull of the year due to one bad out or if something happens that he is not able to buck due to an injury etc.

Scene of the Crash hasnt won bull of the event one time this entire season so I doubt he will win bull of the year unless some of the other bulls have an off day or Tom Teague has the judges bought off. Here is a list of the bull of the event winners so far, Cochise has been bull of the event at the last two events so the bulls that have won the most bull of the events would be your favorites for bull of the year because this is excactly how bull of the year will be determined this year. www.pbrnow.com/home.cfm#salem

What about Cochise? He has high mark 3 times this year. Chicken has a great chance at it, but i like white magic, with the new format, i think the finalists will be cochise, chicken on a chain, white magic, big bucks and scene of the crash. and with the way the year has been going White magic will put up the top score of the finals.

My guess is that when it gets down to the end, Scene of the Crash will get his due. I think the rep will help him out tremendously.

Both Scene of the Crash and Big Bucks are still the two best bulls in the PBR as far as I'm concerned. Scene of the Crash has been a little better in this last few outs, so I'd give the advantage to him right now.
Keep an eye on Versus Blackout too. That bull has put out some VERY rank trips this season.

I agree. In the end, I think the 5 candidates, in no particular order, this year will be:
White Magic Chicken on a Chain Scene of the Crash Big Bucks Versus Blackout
One more thing about the 5 top candidates in terms of the voting: In a way, it could be unfair for other bulls who have not had bad outs to not even be nominated, but at the same time, if there's a bull who has at least ONE bad out, sometimes they shouldn't be even considered. Remember 2004? Crossfire Hurricane was perhaps the leading candidate until his bad trip in Colorado Springs. In the end, I don't think he even made the top ten that year. It all goes back to the trip. But at the same time, it was kinda unfair to see bulls like Night Life not even be considered that year, because I think 2004 was his best year.

I think "Chicken on a Chain" has all the attributes to be BOTY. He's big, bad, rank, fast, amazingly athletic; but still ridable. No cheap tricks with "The Chicken". Three time Salem High Score Bull of the Event. And who can forget McBride on "Chicken".
Want to see more of White Magic. Would love to see someone last 6 or 7 sec. and see the bulls whole trip. Very strong bull.
Versus Blackout had one of the rankest trips of the year in Charlotte. Has not had a bad out, but maybe just a little (very little) inconsistent. He has been fighting injury. Bull has a lot of heart. Another out or two like in Charlotte could push him to the top.
Cochise Has looked very good. Need to see him a few more times. He's a contender.
Big Bucks and Scene of the Crash; what more can you say. Two of the best in the business. They were campaigned hard at the begining of the year, and I would guess we'll see them alot in the final stretch.
By the way those bulls are listed in no particular order (except maybe "Chicken"!), and there are other contenders out there. Diamond S and the Bergers both have bulls that could end up on top.
I think we'll see all of these bulls 2 or 3 more times before the finals, and the final 5 will be decided in the next two months.
Watch for the amazing "Chicken" September 14 & 15 in Greensboro, NC and October 12 & 13 in Columbus, OH

After seeing him buck these last few outs (and very very well), I think Copperhead Slinger needs to be thrown into the mix. He's been getting even better!
