Got a chance to go to the Challenger Event at Tidioute, PA, this past weekend - pretty good bulls and some top name riders. Unfortunately, also L O T S of rain during both night's performances, too! It was an outdoor arena and we were under cover, which helped some but not totally. But those poor riders - they were out in it and it just POURED! Lots of slippery bull ropes accounted for a small amount of riders riding their bulls. Was somewhat disappointed that some of my favorites didn't cover their bulls, like Mike Lee and Travis Briscoe, but it was nice to see Mike Collins and Sean Willingham come out on top.
Here is the press release from the PBR:
Mike Collins (Adair, Okla.) captured the Professional Bull Riders' (PBR) U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company Challenger Tour title in Tidioute, Pa. when he achieved 174 points on two bulls to earn $6,805. The Battle on Bull Mountain in Tidioute was held on August 19-20 and hosted by the Hickory Creek Wilderness Ranch Arena. Finishing second behind Collins was Sean Willingham (Summerville, Ga.) with 170.5 points on two which was good for $4,277. Rounding out the top three was Clay McIntyre (Zolfo Springs, Fla.) with a cumulative score of 164.5 points and a $2,333 payday. Incidentally, Collins also picked up a top four finish worth $2,164 in Archdale, N.C. at the Jerome Davis PBR Invitational U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company Challenger Tour event for weekend earnings totaling $8,969. Collins, 25, has $349,785 in PBR career earnings to date.
Michael Riggs (Claxton, Ga.) stole the show at the Davis Ranch Arena in Archdale, August 19-20, pocketing $6,493. Riggs was the only man to cover two bulls during the competition. The Archdale win represents the biggest coup of Riggs' season and of his PBR career. Nick Landreneau won the preliminary round with 89.5 points which placed him second in the average in front of 2004 PBR World Champion Mike Lee (Decatur, Texas) and Collins. Lee and Collins split third and fourth place monies. Lee, 22, has been sidelined from competition since February of the 2005 season due to should surgery. The win brings Lee's season earnings to $16,348 and his PBR career earnings to $1,691,981.
The format for the events in Archdale and Tidioute consisted of 45 contestants per night competing in preliminary go round action in an effort to become one of the ten men to qualify for the event finals held at the conclusion of each evening performance.
