The field is set for the national Bullfighting Championship in Las Vegas the first weekend of the finals. Here are the qualifiers:
1999 Wrangler Bullfight World Champion Lance Brittan (Windsor, Colo.), 32, Andy Burelle (Brighton, Mich.), 30, and 2005 Dickies National Championship Bullfighting co-winner Wacey Munsell (Ulysses, Kan.), 19, qualified to fight in Las Vegas during the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company (USSTC) Challenger Tour event held in Cheyenne, Wyo., July 24-25. Munsell, a third generation bullfighter, and Sam Gress (Hutchison, Kan.) tied for the Dickies National Championship Bullfighting title during the 2005 PBR World Finals.
Dusty Tuckness (Meeteetsee, Wyo.), 20, and Toby Inman (Davis Junction, Ill.) qualified for the National Championship by virtue of their placing at the Tulsa Express PBR Classic held in Tulsa, Okla., July 21-23.
Qualifiers representing Canada advanced through five rounds of competition at events held throughout the 2006 season. Curtis Smyth (Kennedy, Sask.), 21, earned his trip after winning qualifying events in Cereal, Wanham, and Hussar, Alberta, and finishing second in Lloydminster, Sask. Jesse Byrne (Prince Albert, Sask.), 20, won first at four qualifying events in Lloydminster, Lashburn, Eastonia, and Eastend. Byrne will also serve as a protection bullfighter at the Tristone Capital PBR Rocky Cup Canadian National Finals at Pengrowth Stadium in Calgary, Alberta, Nov. 24-26, 2006.
I have seen several of these guy fight and I can tell you they are amazing to watch. It should be some very tough competition. I encourage anyone that has the opportunity to watch the competition to do so. It gives you a great appreciation for what they do.
