Well, I got to thinking about this because I have interest in being a contractor someday just for the pure fun of it. And I know there may be some on here that already do some of that, and that is great too! They can share their strategies as well.
So here is the point of the topic.
If you were going to start contracting, what type of bull would you look to get the most? Would you try and breed for the fast spinners (Blueberry Wine), or would you try to get the big boys (Promiseland)? Or would you just try to get the best athletes (Mesquite Heat)?
I'll post my thoughts after I think awhile, but hopefully we can get some discussion out of this..

If you are going to be a serious contractor I would say you should try to raise some of each. The big bulls will have a better chance of that Bull of the Year type reputation, assuming they are that good. The smaller bulls are more electric but don't always get that big score if they get covered.

Im interested in contracting one day too! I think Id have to go with the bulls that you can tell have the heart for it. For example: Hotel California (may he rest in peace), Western Wishes, Mossy Oak Mudslinger, etc... In my opinion, I dont think the size will really matter that much when the bull doesn't perform. lol. "Its not the size of the dog in the fight that matters, its the size of the fight in the dog" ;D just look at blueberry wine!

i agree with megz that heart is number one. but i beleive that almost all of these bulls have that, otherwise they wouldn't be bucking at the level they are now. besides that i'd go for the most athletic bulls i could. if they are big and bold, or small and quick. as long as they are athletic, they'll get the job done, and hopefully do it for a long time. but to be a great contractor you obvisouly need a little bit of each in your bucking string, so they can pick up each other's slack in the overall picture.
question; do you beleive that bucking style is somewhat gentic, or is it learned through past bucking experiences?

Thanx for agreeing first off. um i think that the bucking style can go either way.personally i think id feel stronger about them "learnig from experience". I mean i always here about the contractors taking years to get one good bull out of a great sire. Then you see the younger bulls get out of the chute with their blood in them and have a bad trip...then sometimes a few years later after a lot of experience they are pretty rank. I think squirt gun would be an example for the "learned from experience" i never saw him before this year but i remember the announcers talking about how he used to be weak and then this year they were like "WOW! thats the strongest trip we've seen him have" but idk his genetics. by the way...lol jace. How true. cash cash cash.

The best thing to do is just go into a partnership with someone find out what he does, take his knowledge and use it to your advantage. Then start your own Program with the knowledge you accquired.
Cody all you need is about 50 acres a good bull lots of cows and dude you can be a contractor. i deliver to one guy in AVA missouri who has 20 bulls in a 2 acre domicile it is pretty nasty and he is one of the contractors that supplies the Cowboys 2000 in Springfield. He has got a couple of really good bulls. So i guess anything is possible. Go by yourself a $50,000 bull who has made a name and you are on your way.

If I get lucky enough to get a good bunch of buckers, I'm not going to worry about their style. As long as they get the job done. My main objective would be to try to bring up my stock almost like pets in hopes that they wouldn't go after the guys after being bucked off. Probably sounds silly, but I figure it's worth a try. There's been a couple bulls in history like that...so why not try to get a whole herd.

I never did post my thoughts on this topic like I said I would, so here goes.
If I had to choose which kind of bulls I could have, I would definitely go with the Blueberry Wine type of bulls. I think Shane fits this category nowadays, as does Here's Your Sign. I would definitely just want bulls that get the job done, but the little ones would be my picks of the litter so to speak.
I know bulls like Promiseland, Ladies Man, etc. buck exceptionally hard, but they just aren't very entertaining in my opinion. I want to see some heart-pounding action.

if i were a stock contractor i would want a bit of everything but i wouldnt have many of the little things. i would have the high flying bulls like Zandy was and the bulls that will buck you off not out run you

As far as size goes give me a big bull anyday. I hate small bulls as a rider and now that im raising bulls as well Im definitely breeding to larger bulls.
