This is a pretty interesting topic. I just got into owning bucking stock last year. My cattle live in Texas and I live in Maine, so you don't even need land to get going. I would have to say that if you are going to start doing this, you don't necessarily have to go after the top bloodlines, such as BBW. Using BBW as an example, his straws are usually around $1.5K a piece if you can find them, and that's not always possible. A BBW cow will go for at least $5K, it if she produces it's a crapshoot. Also, we haven't seen a whole lot of his sons on tour, and that's probably because he hasn't been bred to much. So, in a round about way, what I'm trying to say is I feel it's better to go for older proven lines. Two bulls that come to mind are Skat Kat and Houdini. Both bulls have straws for under $500 a piece, can easily be found, and have a ton of sons going down the road, not to mention grandsons too. Both bulls' daughters produce as well. Sometimes cheaper isn't always better, but expensive isn't always better either. As far as what kind of animals you want to breed depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to play the futurity game, then you need to raise spinners. If you want to raise big name bulls that will be spectacular and are unridable then you want to raise arm jerkers like Dr. PRoctor and Avalanche. The big thing you need to remember is that it's all about having fun. I haven't made a cent yet, but I'm having a blast.
As for me, I'm trying to raise bulls that can go down the road. I don't care how famous they are or how much money they make me. I just want to raise bulls that pay for themselves and have fun doing it.
Just a few thoughts, Arthur
