Ok just thought i'd share this will y'all. so i went to westernaires tonight and we had just done a grand entry for the high school rodeo. well that was terrible and i knew tonight we'd get yelled at for doing such a bad job. so we were riding and having a pretty good time. so they asked us to take our feet out of the stirrups and i was hesitent but i did it. i'd never riden my horse faster then a walk bareback or without stirrups because he's very leg sensitive and just never have. so i did good for a while and then we did a circle and i was slipping and i fell off my horse and down between my horse and my friends. i feel underneath her horse and hit my head on the horses back legs. the horse jumped over my head so she wouldn't hit me and i curled up so i wouldn't get hit again. once i feel off my horse walked away and stood. my head hurt really bad and my instructors came over and first aid to see if everything was ok. i got up and even tho my head hurt i got back on my horse and continued with the ride. it hurt to trot and i felt like throwing up the rest of the time. well i got a minor concusion from it. so if i post anything stupid tonight i'm sorry my heads shakn up right now. well just wanted to share my fall with everyone.

Wow that sounds painful! Concussions can be horrible. Great job getting back on and finishing the ride. It also sounds like you have some well trained horses too. Hope you are feeling better!#doctor#

Ashley, What might I ask was the purpose of an exercise in riding without your feet in the stirrups? At that point you were basically bareback among a herd of horses (sounds to me like an accident waiting to happen). A well trained barrel horse thinks and reacts differently than a field pony with legs wrapped around it's belly. I might be old school, but believe ... toes in and heels down. cowboy4443

ashley,
one thing that riding with out sturrips do is help improve your balance. normally, it should be done where you are widley spaced out so that if you do fall off, you wont get run over. i have dont it before and it has helped, plus the horse gets used to being ridden in a different style. you should have spoke up to your instructors and said that you were not comfortable doing it. sorry about your fall. in all my years riding, i have never had a bad fall, just bailed out a few times on some crazy ass horses. anyway, i hope you are feeling better.

Without knowing exactly what Ashley's instructors had in their minds when they asked them to ride without stirrups, I'm going to say that it may have been to teach the riders to be more balanced and more dependent on their own balance, rather than relying on the stirrups to keep them on the horse. Instructors of dressage use this technique, along with also no reins (done on a longe line, for obvious reasons!) to teach a rider to use their bodies for balance rather than relying on stirrups and reins. It's pretty scary at first when you try it, but if you have faith in your instructor to keep you safe, it can be a very enlightening experience.
Ashley, glad you weren't seriously hurt! This technique DOES work, but it shouldn't be used in an open arena with LOTS of other horses running around in there with you at the same time. Your instructors need to re-think their training program and try to do things with safety as their #1 priority. If there ever comes a time that they tell you to do something again that just doesn't seem right or may seem unsafe, by golly, QUESTION them!! Just because they're adults doesn't mean they don't have moments of stupidity once in a while!! Your safety should be priority 1!

hehe! Mary, you and I must have both posted at about the same time! And we both replied with essentially the same information. Hope this helps you, Ashley! - Dana
