COLUMBUS, Ohio (October 11, 2005) -
2004 Professional Bull Riders (PBR) World Champion, Mike Lee (Decatur, Texas), captured top honors of the PBR U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company Challenger Tour Finals presented by Dickies, which was held in Columbus, Ohio at the Ohio Expo Center on October 11-12. Lee’s convincing 91 point performance during the third and final round of action enabled him to secure the victory in a two point margin over runner-up J.W. Hart (Overbrook, Okla. ). Lee’s total on three bulls was 265.5 and his skill and expertise was rewarded to the tune of $28,508 in PBR bucks. Lee placed third in round one with 87.5 points aboard Mark Reed’s Hang ‘Em High, split fifth through eighth place money in round two with 87 points, and dominated final round competition with 91 points on Taylor Made Bucking Bulls’ Smokeless Wardance.
Of the final round showdown against Smokeless Wardance, Lee said, “I’d never had him before that I recall but he bucked real hard and whipped me down but I was able to recover.” Lee, who was sidelined in January due to shoulder surgery, returned to PBR action with a vengeance at the end of July and has since earned $51,494 to date. His goals for the upcoming Built Ford Tough World Finals, October 28-30 and November 3-6, reflect Lee’s characteristic focus. “I’m healthy and really I’m just looking forward to the next bull I get on. My goal is to take one bull at a time at the Finals and to do God’s will.”
The U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company Challenger Tour Finals presented by Dickies hit Columbus, Ohio for two days of intense action leading into the final regular season Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) event, which will be held at Nationwide Arena on October 15-16, also in Columbus . The two consecutive PBR events represent one of the most action-packed weeks of the bull riding season as well as being the cutoff for qualification to the elite Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada .
In the go rounds it was Renato Nunes Da Rosa (Sao Paulo, Brazil) who captured an early lead on Monday, October 11 with 89 points on Ricky West’s Cowboy Certified Easy. Nunes Da Rosa edged Welsh, La. cowboy Nick Landreneau by a slim half point margin. Landreneau spurred his way to 88.5 points aboard Berger and Ryken’s Rockin’ Robin. Round two action saw veteran bull rider Brian Herman ( Victoria, Texas ) on top with 90 championship points aboard Keith Strickland’s Milk Baby, and Tater Porter ( Kenansville, Fla. ) in second with 89.5 on Keith Strickland’s Bowhart. It was Hart and Lee however who dueled for the title in final round action as the last two men to compete. Hart achieved 89.5 points aboard Taylor Made Bucking Bulls’ Pudd, however Lee answered the call posting the high marked ride of the event.
The 2005 Challenger Tour year end champion receives $10,000 in bonus money courtesy of U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company. Edgard Oliveira ( Sao Paulo, ) earned the 2005 year end bonus.
