The pettiness between the PBR and PRCA has always seemed ridiculous to me, and here's a perfect example. This show is going to be great, a wonderful thing to do for a family in need. So how do the two organizations portray it? As a way to take all the credit. Observe from the stories they each posted about it:
PRCA:
ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to have rodeo flair in Oct. 2 episode
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - When the ABC mega-hit show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition knocked on the doors of the PRCA Headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo., in mid-July, the ProRodeo family couldn't wait to jump in and get dirty.
Wrangler, Justin Brands and virtually every other PRCA corporate partner opened their pocketbooks and hearts to a Colorado Springs-area family whose 101-year-old, 2,000-square-foot farmhouse could no longer meet the needs of six children and their parents.
Billy Jack and Anne Barrett and their kids - four are adopted out of foster care programs - live in the tiny town of Peyton, which is situated a few miles east of Colorado Springs. The Barretts were chosen for the makeover for opening their lives and home to troubled and disadvantaged children. More than 3,000 applications are considered each day by the show.
ABC will be airing the Barrett Family episode on Sunday, Oct. 2, beginning at 8 ET. This is the second episode in the show’s third season lineup, which begins on Sunday, Sept. 25. In 2004, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’s second season attracted an audience 4.7 million viewers larger than the show’s inaugural season. The show also ranked No. 1 in its 8 p.m. time slot in 2004 among total viewers, across each of the adult demographics, as well as, among teens and kids.
The Barretts are horse people and love the sport of rodeo. The ABC Extreme Makeover team's task was to tear down the family's existing home and build a new house that represented the family's passion for rodeo and the Western culture.
The PRCA's contribution - with help from Wrangler - included helping organize a special appearance at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs by country music sensation Brad Paisley. It also coordinated the talents and knowledge of barrel racer Shali Lord, timed-event cowboy J.D. Crouse and bull rider Lee Akin, who helped the Extreme Makeover crew with the children's bedrooms that carried a rodeo or equestrian theme.
The new house featured a barrel racing room, a roping room, a bull riding room and a "jumping room." When it came time to outfit the house, PRCA sponsors Justin, Jack Daniel's Wrangler, Montana Silversmiths, Dodge, Cactus Ropes, Coors and B&W stepped up with $500 each for a Ty Murray-endorsed bucking bull machine from Rockin' B.
Justin also provided boots and ball caps for the family and gift certificates for future merchandise purchases of their products. Dennis Carroll, owner of Cactus Ropes and Cactus Saddlery, donated a heeling machine, several saddles and some new and old ropes to help decorate the roping room.
Resistol outfitted the family with cowboy hats, while Montana Silversmiths donated buckles for each family member, as well as for the ABC crew on site. Montana Silversmiths also helped with the home's interior design and presented buckles to the entire design team.
Wrangler made sure the family and ABC crew were outfitted in its classic Western clothes, which were picked up at local retailers. Wrangler also presented the family with a guitar signed by country music legend George Strait.
PBR
(September 22, 2005) In early July the ABC series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition asked the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) if they could lend a helping hand with an important project. What resulted was a storm of activity that made one Peyton, Colo. family's dream home become a reality. In coordination with bull rider Lee Akin (Weatherford, Okla.) and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition producers, the PBR bucked into action. The infectious enthusiasm and hard work of all those involved transformed a 101-year-old farmhouse into a modernized living space designed to meet the needs of Billy Jack and Anne Barrett and their six children; four of whom were adopted from foster care into this special family.
Be sure to catch this must see episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on Sunday, October 2nd. Please check your local television listings to verify broadcast times.
When ABC revealed to the Barretts that they had been selected for the makeover, the entire family was ushered out of town on a week long Hawaiian vacation as ABC's crew went to work with carpenters, painters, builders and decorators to resurrect the rural property in seven short days. One of the Barrett children, A.J., disclosed to ABC that his favorite PBR bull rider is Lee Akin. Within hours Akin was en route to Colorado, eager for the chance to be involved. Coincidentally, Akin had previously baptized one of the Barrett children. The PBR furnished Akin's travel and upon his arrival to the project site, his sponsors also went to work in support of the cause.
"All of my sponsors including Express Ranches, Acme Boots, TheraSeed, Wrangler, Line-X and American Hat were very supportive of my participation in this worthy project," Lee remarked. "I was very pleased and thankful that TheraSeed donated a life-size cardboard cutout of me in my bull riding gear that is now part of A.J.'s room."
Akin also donated his bull rope, chaps and glove for display in A.J.'s customized room. The PBR went to work to secure donated merchandise such as hats for a crew of 300 and official PBR furnishings for the home. PBR wallpaper border, apparel, toys, trading cards, clocks, work gloves, caps, and travel coffee mugs were among the items donated. Additionally, the PBR donated eight tickets and VIP passes to the PBR's Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream Invitational in Pueblo, Colo. September 3 in order for the Barretts to attend.
While visiting the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition site Akin provided ABC host and top decorator Michael Moloney with a bull riding tutorial! Michael's flamboyant solid white outfit, colorful scarf, and wooly chaps are sure to start a new trend among the bull riders. Or, maybe not. Akin performed a bull riding exhibition for ABC cameras to the amazement of the crew on hand.
Tom Forman, Creator & Executive Producer of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition remarked, "I can't begin to express how meaningful it was to the Barrett family to know that Lee Akin and everyone at the PBR cared enough about the family to participate. We were particularly touched that Lee shared his personal story about becoming a bull rider. It inspired us as well as the Barrett family."
The PBR was honored to contribute to such a genuine cause and to assist a very well-deserving family.
Both organizations deserve praise for helping the family. Why not give the other credit where it is due?
