There has been a lot of rider talk going into 2006, but the bulls haven't gotten any respect yet. I'm here to try to change all that.
2005 was a pretty down year for the bulls in my opinion. We lost my favorite bull, Hotel California. Also, High Tide is probably done bucking due to injury. And you can't forget the retirements of Blueberry Wine and LYJ.
There is definitely a changing of the guard going on as far as bulls go. Big Bucks won the Bull of the Year Award in his first full PBR year, and the same could happen this year.
My question is simple: Who Will Win Bull of the Year in 2006?
I'll think about it and give some thoughts in a day or two.

Dont forget that Rooster was forced into retirement by injury! High Tide is done for sure. Not only did he injure his vertabrae, he got bit by a rattlesnake! A bunch of other really good bulls died in '05 as well. Anyhow....
I think Stray Kitty and Sports Machine are likely candidates. That is, if they arent being hauled to the ABBI events anyhow - I dont know if they are 4 or 5 years old. Also, Wardance is looking pretty good. Chad Berger and Larry Ryken bought a bunch of bulls from Harlan Robertston, and they are all BBOTY material. Texas Jack and Scardy Cat come to mind first. If Chad and Larry decide to buy Vertical Limit from Harlan, they will have another BBOTY type bull.

Which notable bulls did they buy from Harlan? I know he had some awesome ones, so I'm curious.

I think that Wardance has a great chance, but from what i saw in Uncasville i think that Sir Patrick will give him a run for his money. But there will always be M.O. Mudslinger, and Reindeer, and we'll see if Big Bucks will keep up. Its gonna be a tough one this year!

What about Jerry Nelson's Just A Dream? He didn't have a great trip at the finals but other than that 84.5, JW Hart put up 92 big ones on him and the rest have all been buck offs. Possibly if he can stay healthy and the riders don't figure him out Big Bucks. You gotta be doing something right if you beat out a three time champion to become the Bull of the Year.
I'd like to see Pandora's Box get it but he'll probably end up like Blueberry Wine and have something that's just not good enough for him to be bull of the year.
Hey Slingblade is another good one I think. Probably won't even get glanced at for the honor but only 6 rides out of 53 outs is definately going in the right direction if you ask me.

Just A Dream just isn't consistent enough to be bull of the year....or he wasn't in 2005 anyway. He is one of the toughest to ride, but it always seems like he is a little trashy. I sure wouldn't want to draw him in the short-go if I had my pick. And I think riders will take that into consideration. It's kinda the same reason Reindeer doesn't get picked for bull of the year, along with not having many outs.
As for SlingBlade, I think the same thing applies. He is just too trashy at times, and then awesome other times. Tony Mendes' trip on SlingBlade was awesome! The bull was as honest and tough as I've seen him in a year or so.
I think this will be the year of the new bulls. The PBR needs some new bulls to step up and replace the likes of Blueberry, LYJ, Rooster, High Tide, Hotel California, etc. It will be tough, but it will be needed.
A bull I absolutely love is Neon Nights. He has struggled with consistency, but he was better in 2005 than he was in 2004. He is still young, and he will only continue to improve. His first trip with Chris Shivers was one of the rankest I've ever seen. Neon Nights has the potential to be a bull of the year candidate, and I'm picking him as the early frontrunner. It's a personal pick, but it's still a decent possibility.
Also, I look for more great things from Big Bucks, Mossy Oak Mudslinger, Smokeless Wardance, Pandora's Box, Kid Rock, etc. Maybe it will be Kid Rock's year to win bull of the year.

I believe that St. Patrick was the high marked bull at the finals wasn't he? I thought he scored 47.5. He is a bucking machine and i think he is one to keep an eye on. The other bull that is flying under the radar, at least here, is Ladies Man. Owen may be gone but he has got one rank dude in ladies man so we should be seeing alot of owen and the "5 LADIES". The usual suspects like MO mudslinger and Reindeer along with wardance should be watched closely.
Then my long shot of the year would be Shane, with a bull rating of 44.8, with a buckoff percentage of 94.4 and only given up one qualified ride he may be the dark horse in this race.
Nevermind on the st patric thing it was Sir Patrick i was thinking of and it was uncasville where he scored back to back 46's. Sorry about that.

One thing I wonder is, how much longer does Mudslinger have? He's been in the PBR since 2001, and he's had I think over 80 outs now, but maybe he'll be just like Western Wishes - he'll surpass 100 and still never miss a beat (although he did have a weak out at the Finals when Keith Roquemore got DQ'd for the loops).
As for Pandora's Box, I bet as long as he never has another bad day like the one he had in Pueblo with Cody Whitney, he can be in contention.
Wardance and Big Bucks are the two I think we need to look out for. Really? Sir Patrick used to be Sparky? (Or is it St. Patrick? Are they two different bulls?) Wow, good to know we'll be seeing more of him. I'm not counting out Kidd Rock either, because he's always been impressive.
And lastly, if Reindeer can get his act together in Vegas, I think he can win it all.

St. Patrick used to be known as Sparky. Chad Berger and Larry Ryken own him. Berger Bucking ulls owns Sir Patrick. Its very confusing.
I dont think Just A Dream will win it. The riders arent going to vote for him. Jerry does have a young bull named Salty Cat that just might fit the bill though.

It's a long year but if I were to put my money on it I would dare say that Wardance or Neon Nights are the front runners for Bull of the Year. Scaredy Cat and Big Deal are still young and it will be interesting to see how they deal with the maturing process. I have personally saw some bull's get better or worse when they develop and put on weight, also you are going to have to factor in how much Big Deal and Scaredy Cat have been hauled as young bull's. Since they were three they'v had plenty of black smoke behind there ears bucking a 3 year old bull that much is similair to having a 14 year old kid with a full time job, some will handle it and some will just give up.

Harlan had been hauling Scaredy Cat for a while, and Big Deal has been in the futurities and classics for a whil now - they both have been sucking down the diesel smoke. Ive seen a few outs from Big Deal, and nothing that has made me go "wow".
How about that Huskers Red! EEELIMINATOR.

Huskers Red sure had a wicked trip in the Mossy Oak. It will be interesting to see how consistent he is this season.

Yeah, Huskers Red can have a 46 outing and then turn around and have a few 41s or 42s in a row. He is definitely inconsistent, but if he consistently bucks like he did last night in Mossy Oak round, he will be in the running for bull of the year for sure. Cody Whitney didn't have a chance, and I'm not sure anyone else would have either.
