The first-round draw for Jacksonville is up, and it looks like there are quite a few new bulls in the mix. Here are the match-ups I have my eyes on the most.
Aaron Roy vs. River City Dreams
Aaron Roy has three top-eight finishes in his last four BFTS events, and he also rode very well at the PBR World Cup last month. River City Dreams, owned by McNeill/Weeks/Tater Porter has been ridden four out of seven outs on the BFTS for an average ride score of 85.44 points. The Canadian should have no problem getting the first bull under his belt this weekend, and he will be well on his way to another top-10 finish.
My Pick: Aaron Roy
Beau Hill vs. Short Notice
Beau Hill hasn't ridden very well this season, and a lot of that is due to the injury bug. Hill's first-round bull is Short Notice from Teague Bucking Bulls, LLC. The bull has one BFTS out, and he was ridden by Dustin Elliot for 87 points. This is a great draw for any cowboy, but I'm going to have to go against the rider in this one.
My Pick: Short Notice
Cord McCoy vs. Wrangler Magic
Cord McCoy has had an up-and-down season to say the least. He has had his fair share of success in 2008, but he has been on the downside the last month or so. His first-round bull is Wrangler Magic, owned by Jerome and Sandie Scallions. This animal athlete has bucked under the radar a little, and the stats are pretty solid. He has been ridden five out of nine outs on the BFTS this season for an average ride score of 88.45 points. This could be a potential round winner for McCoy, but the bull will get the last laugh this time around.
My Pick: Wrangler Magic
Dustin Elliot vs. Encore
Dustin Elliot hasn't had a solid finish since Tulsa, and he will be looking to change that this weekend in Jacksonville. His first round draw is Encore, a bull owned by Jeff Robinson/Anchor Bull Company. The bull has been bucked nine times on the BFTS this year, and he has been ridden seven times (including a couple 90-point rides). Look for this ride to put Elliot in the top two or three after the first round.
My Pick: Dustin Elliot
J.B. Mauney vs. Gray Spot
J.B. Mauney is coming off his first event win of the season, and he seems to be peaking at the right time of the year. His first round bull in Jacksonville is Renegade Rodeo's Gray Spot. The bull has been out three times this season on the BFTS and is unridden. Regardless of the bull J.B. draws, I'm not picking against him right now. He will dress Gray Spot up and finish in the top five or six in the round.
My Pick: J.B. Mauney
Kasey Hayes vs. Man Law
First off, it's great to see Kasey Hayes back on the BFTS. I expected him to be gone longer, but these cowboys are tough! Hayes has ridden decent in the two events since returning from surgery, and he has drawn Jeff Robinson's Man Law in the first round this weekend. This bull has been ridden twice in 12 BFTS outs this season. Man Law has two shaky bull scores that bring his average down, but for the most part, he is a 43-point bull. He has bucked off his last seven riders, and unfortunately for Kasey, he will make it eight in a row. Keep an eye on this animal athlete because he has some potential.
My Pick: Man Law
Kody Lostroh vs. Chance
Kody Lostroh has been a top-five guy for most of the season, and he is coming off two consecutive eighth-place finishes on the main circuit. The Colorado cowboy has drawn Chance, a bull owned by Teague Bucking Bulls, LLC. This bull has been ridden three times in six BFTS outs in 2008, and the average ride score is 88.33 points. The average bull score is a shade over 44 points, with the highest being a 46. These two should get along very well, and that's why I'm making it my pick to win the first round in Jacksonville. This one may reach 90!
My Pick: Kody Lostroh
Ross Coleman vs. Fire Plug
Ross Coleman has quietly put together another solid season, and he is coming off a couple top-five finishes in his last three events. Coleman's first-round bull is Fire Plug of the K & K Cattle Company. The bull hasn't had any BFTS outs in his career, but he was marked 44.5 in his last out on the minor tours. This match-up has fireworks all over it, and I'm going to lean towards Mr. Coleman in this one. He has ridden very well as of late, and he will continue that with something in the mid-to-high 80s.
My Pick: Ross Coleman
