LEGENDS LAST A LIFETIME
Waurika FFA’s Challenge of Champions
On April 18, 2009 a tradition will be reborn. Waurika FFA, in conjunction with Hastings native Rex Dunn, is bringing back the legendary Challenge of Champions to Coyote Hills Arena. This prestigious event once attracted rodeo stars such as Tuff Hedeman, Lane Frost, and Ty Murray. Waurika FFA is hoping that the return of this event will revive the excitement it once elicited.
Rex Dunn grew up around the game called rodeo. However, he soon realized the great importance that bullfighters play in the safety of bull riders. Some observers see “rodeo clowns” as goofs, but they are the first line of defense in a dangerous sport. Rex always knew the danger involved in bullfighting, but he was not deterred. He says, “If you’re not afraid, then there is something wrong with you.”
Rex soon made it to the “Super Bowl” of rodeo and bullfighting, the National Finals Rodeo. Not once, but several times Rex reached the greatest level of competition, appearing at the National Finals Rodeo.
In 1989, the legendary Dunn started the tradition of Challenge of Champions at his Coyote Hills Arena. Challenge of Champions, a semi-annual event, was a magnet for rodeo goers from miles around. Over the years, the Challenge came to a halt. Waurika FFA recognized a great opportunity to bring back what was once a tradition. The electricity and good time that Challenge of Champions once produced is the motivation behind the FFA-Dunn collaboration.
The event will have other entertainment as well, such as Waurika FFA alumni Casey Pilgreen. Pilgreen will perform along with country music favorite and former Nashville Star competitor Jason Meadows, a Calera, Oklahoma native and FFA alumni. Announcers will be Waurika native Brad Scott and another familiar face to rodeo fans, Jim McClain. Judges for the evening have an interesting relationship with Challenge of Champions and Coyote Hills Arena. Judges Frank Newsom of Grandberry, Texas and John Brogan of Bridgeport, Texas both launched their careers at Coyote Hills. Currently, prize money is at $2,700 with nine bull fighters competing for the title of “Champion”. The bulls they well be facing were born and raised by Dunn, and in his words, “These bulls are bred to do one thing and that’s to kill you.”
The audience will also be given the opportunity to bid on several pieces of rodeo history, ranging from signed memorabilia from the likes of Ty Murray to pictures of famous bull fighters such as Freckles Brown as well as Dunn.
Rex Dunn and Waurika FFA hope you will join them to witness the excitement the Challenge of Champions brings. According to Dunn, “The air will definitely be electric”.
