Hey, was wondering if anyone was going to the Sonny Williams Challenger Event on July 23 in Frederick, MD? This is the second year for this event and from what I understand, last year's event was well-attended by TOP PBR riders. We're headed out there in two weeks and was wondering if anyone from here at the board was planning on going, too?

Paulo Crimber walked away from this event as the winner with $9675 in his pocket. Dan Henricks and Mike Collins shared 2nd/3rd place, and Reuben Geleynse was 4th.

This was a very nice event held at the Sonny Williams’ JBarW Ranch, put on by the Patty Pollatos’ Fund as a fundraiser for that charity. Great facility with excellant bull power! In addition to Sonny’s buckers, bulls were hauled there by Tom Teague, Wally Barnette, Tracy English, Mark Reed and Jeff Robinson.
There was an all-u-can-eat pig roast included in the admission price, and they served up the vittles for the entire duration of the event. They also had wild cow milking, and 3 brave teams tried their best to be the first to get some of that white juice in a cup and over to the judges. Unfortunately, one of the guys got stomped and was air-lifted to shock-trauma. No word on his condition.
My favorite ride of the night: Renato Nunes on Sonny Williams’ Freak of Nature. The bull blew out of the chute and bucked high, and bucked hard. In my opinion, this should have been the top-rated ride, but then what do I know?!
Other bulls of note: Rocketman, Nervous Waters, High Tide and Kelly’s Kat from Tom Teague.
Bulls to watch (lesser known but noteworthy nonetheless): Midnight Rider, Corn, Encore (all by Wally Barnette). I think we’ll see these on televised events in the future - they were rank.
All in all, I would highly recommend this event. Some top PBR riders were in attendance along with some up-and-comers. This was the second year for this event, and it looks like it’s going to continue for years to come. I know I’ll be back again for next year’s event!
Whodathunk this caliber of bulls and riders in the middle of Maryland!?
