I think Amanda Newberry said it best on the Fried Twinkie blog, so I copied it and pasted it here... This is coming from an insider and seemed to settle the controversy a little over there.
Amanda Newberry Says: January 11th, 2006 at 9:55 am I just wanted to briefly address the issue. Jody and I were watching the event last night (we recorded it) and noticed that as Allen was getting bucked off his spur drug across Coyote’s back. We put the tape in super slow motion and paused it. You can see a gash on the bulls back. I do not believe that Allen did this intentionally. It was clearly an accident. His spurs may be a little sharper than other riders; however, Cody Lambert checks spurs regularly and will not allow them if he doesn’t think they meet the regulations. For example, Edgard was not allowed to use his spurs on his short round bull in Ft. Lauderdale after cutting his long round bull. Lambert took the spurs (I’m not sure if he gave them back or not) and made Edgard ride with a pair of spurs that met the regulations. Everyone wants to point the finger at the Brazilians. Although they may take longer in the chute, the PBR is trying to address that issue. Having been around all of the guys, I will have to say that I enjoy being around that Brazilians more than anyone. With the exception of a couple of guys, I believe that they are all genuine and try to compete to the best of their ability. With that said, we have to remember that riding bulls in Brazil is much different than here in the US. I believe that truely try to follow the rules and are not trying to cheat or cause problems. It is just a huge adjustment for them to come from a country that does not respect animals to a country that tries to protect them. This is just my opinion. That a 50 cents can buy you a cup of coffee!
God bless, Amanda Newberry

well I agree that to many people are on the brazillians case to much. as for what happen,I say it wasn't intentional. Why would he risk being suspended or fined? What happened sucks but as with the cowboys taken chances with every ride,no one ever said that the bulls couldn't get hurt either. For an animal that large and thick skinned I think he will be fine and back on tour with a vengance....

Yeah, I agree to a certain extent Cammy. But Coyote is out for a month at least, and that is definitely worth some cash right there. The whole situation is unfortunate, but I still believe Moraes should have been suspended at least an event or two for the incident. Jody catching his loop was unintentional, but he was still punished for it. (with a 0) I just don't think a fine is very good punishment for causing an 18-inch cut on a beatiful animal like Coyote. But maybe I'm being too hardcore. I will say this: my opinions wouldn't differ if it were an American, Brazilian, or Australian, and they wouldn't differ if it were Mike Lee, Wiley Peterson, or Jody Newberry. Edit: Let me clear things up a bit. I don't think Moraes should have been fined at all for the incident. I think he should have been suspended an event or two, but not fined. I'm not even that hardcore. If Coyote has to miss time, then Moraes should also have to miss time.

i agree, he can earn $10 000 back in one weekend but i still feel the same way no matter what country you are from if a bull gets cut like what was said it was it is still wrong. now i know i dont have the whole story but sharp spurs just dont sit right with me

Amanda put it very eloquently. In the end I believe that the PBR board, none of which are exactly new comers to the sport, have been given all of the evidence and therefore know better then the rest of us sitting here the exact situation and the proper punishment as outlined by the rules. It is unfortunate anytime any of the animals are injured, weather it is during the ride, in the chutes or even in the back pens. Hopefully we will have a healthy rest of the season for both the animal and human athletes.

ok i'm not a big fan of the moraes's but i don't believe that the cut was intentional. what i don't get is if they were so sharp how come coyote had no cuts on his sides where allan's feet would be? the whole thing just doesn't add up to me. i love coyote he's one of my favorite bulls and will miss seeing him while he is out with the injury. i think allan's punishment is fine. if they had evidence of the spurs that he was wearing and how sharp they really were to absolutely say he was inviolation of the rules and that he ment to hurt coyote then he would deserve the suspension.
cody i'm going to have to dissagree allan shouldn't be suspended for something unintentional i mean it's like saying jody should be suspended one or two events for catching a loop at the finals

HUGE difference. Like I said, intentional or unintentional, the rider should have to be out if the bull has to be out. That's just the fair thing to do. And Terri, just because the PBR Board decided on the punishment doesn't mean we as fans can't make our own opinions clear. I'm still going to feel a suspension was necessary whether or not anyone else agrees or not. And I have the right to that opinion. If you have an opinion, speak it. It's all we have as humans.

I totally agree. My opinion is that in this case the board had the best information to make the decision and therfore I support them in the decision they made. That is why I started my statement with "I believe" I never said that any fan did not have did not have the right to express a contrary opinion...I simply expressed mine which is in support of the punishment.

Fair enough. But it seems to me a lot of people are pretty quick to jump on the "no-controversy" train and agree with the PBR in every situation.
I love the PBR and have taken their side A LOT, but they don't always make the right decisions. Some people seem to think they hung the moon. It makes me wonder what some people "truly" think about some controversial and popular PBR issues.

yes one inflicted more harm then the other but they were both unintentional and shouldn't be suspended. just cuz u accidentaly cut someone doesn't mean you should go to jail for a few nights does it

I'm guessing you were being sarcastic about the "jail" part, so I won't even get into that.
A little time off wouldn't hurt Mr. Moraes now would it? It wouldn't hurt him anymore than it's hurting Coyote.
You have your opinion, and I have mine. I think yours is wrong, and you think mine is wrong. That's the beauty of discussion and debate.

I have thought alot about this and some other things also. I do not believe that Allan Moraes is innocent. I think that he is guilty and the proof is the fact the animal is injured. Have any of you guys tried to cut leather is takes alot of work. The Brazillians and the sportsmanship have been questioned on many occasions. First it was the "soaking" of the bulls so much so Don Kish would not allow his bulls to be in the pbr anymore ultimately selling most of his bulls. Many other contractors should do the same thing and maybe they would take notice that their behavior is unacceptable. Then the whole Edgard and his "loops" thing more of a black eye for their reputation. Then this.
If the Brazillians want us as fans not to bad mouth their ethics and there sportsmanship they need to quit getting caught, better yet just quit doing wrong. I think they do it because they are trying everything in their power to make as much money as possible at any cost. Well maybe their integrity.
Amanda Newberry may be closer to the situation but i feel that she may be to "close" and not keeping an open mind. Everytime a rider has done wrong and got caught, we as fans have been covering up for them and in most cases making excuses for them. The fact is they have been caught.
The bottom line here is that a bull has been injured. The last person on him was Allan Moraes, therefore he needs to be suspended and have his gear checked on a weekly bases. One more thing, everyone is talking about the money aspect, I think they should deduct points from him and also suspend him until the bull can perform again. That way he loses points and also loses the potential to make money and will not qualify for the finals and that is the precedent that needs to be set. Just a few thoughts.

Have you called Don and Janelle to confirm the reason they are selling their mature bulls?
Edgard and Ednei have both been caught with illegal rowels in the past. With a small number of Brazilians, and multiple infractions, Id say its a problem that should be looked into. Maybe the PBR should hire a tech inspector to ake sure everyone equipment is legal before each event.
Another thing that we are leaving out is, what was Allan using to keep the rowel from spinning freely? Lots of guys use a nail or wire, and that might have cut Coyote. We can only speculate, and without knowing that kind of info, we really cant say who is right or wrong. My first reaction was "hang him high". If you think about it for a second or two and explore all the possibilities, it might not have been illegal rowels.

Mr. Borders, I do not know the Kish's so to answer that I cannot. I do know other contractors, who have implied that, but not really coming out and saying it. I think you and alot of others know the reasons behind Don getting out of this with the number one reason being politics.
